What is Polycotton?

What is polycotton made from?

The fabric like its name is a blend of polyester and cotton, a blend of natural and synthetic material, a blend of strength, breathability and durability. Most people say you get the best of both worlds, but we like to describe it as a ying and yang fabric - opposite but equal forces.

Polycotton comes in different blend percentages e.g 70% cotton and 30% polyester, but usually cotton makes up the larger percentage.

Polycotton comes in all kinds of designs, from floral prints to dragons, tartan check to unicorns and of course plain and simple solid colours.

Polycotton uses

Polycotton is used in so many items you use, wear, see, touch everyday. Here is just a flavour of the types of things polycotton is an excellent choice for:

  • Bedding

  • Tote Bags

  • Cushions

  • Face Masks

  • Curtains

  • Clothing

  • Table cloths

Why should I use polycotton

  • As cottons tend to be more expensive than polyester, by having a mix resulting in polycotton brings the cost of the product down making polycotton more affordable.

  • By blending polyester into the cotton it makes the fabric stronger than 100% cotton.

  • On its own polyester doesn’t let the skin breathe, by blending cotton with polyester it adds an element of breathability.

  • Polycotton is tougher so when it is used for products that get a lot of ‘wear and tear’ it will tend to outlast cotton and for clothing items the fabric can be washed over and over without shrinkage that would happen to cotton.

  • Put the iron down! Step away from the iron! - Polycotton doesn’t crease as much as cotton so there is less need for ironing.

Should I chose polycotton

  • Cotton is a softer fabric against the skin, if you are making clothing or items that would touch the skin, if you have sensitive skin 100% cotton may be a better choice.

  • If you live in the hotter climate countries or you are making a summer wear item, you may want to consider 100% cotton over polycotton. Pure cotton is more breathable and feels lighter than polycotton.
